Al VanArsdal, a consultant with 25 years experience in change management and human systems dynamics, is the principal at VanArsdal and Associates. Al works in collaboration with his clients to do a Change Audit - to identify the outcomes they want, and to assess the effectiveness of the change effort, no matter where the organization is in the change process.

His contributions to any effort then shift to the design and implementation of key initiatives that optimize chances for success – including executive and leader coaching, building leadership capability, change planning and design, executive team development, internal communications norms and processes, Human Resource and ‘people system’ design, and large-scale interventions (‘getting the whole system in the room’ to plan and commit to a shared future). He calls upon a network of experienced professionals to collaborate on specific projects as needed.

PRINCIPLES FOR EFFECTIVE CHANGE

  • The organization must pay attention to its ‘noble purpose’ – why it exists, who it is there to serve.
  • Leaders must have a commitment to improvement, and be willing to examine their own impact on the organization.
  • The senior leadership team must possess a high level of discipline and effectiveness in order to weather the conflict and stress associated with major change efforts.
  • Change and transformation is not simple cause and effect, and leaders must have a roadmap that helps them guide the process as it develops.
  • Involving people in the changes that affect them is critical for sustainable results – a single leader cannot do it alone. A critical mass of committed people is essential.
  • Courageous and honest discussion lead to quality decisions and quality results.
